Best of Blue Ridge

I know that when away from home, I wonder where to eat…Here is a perfectly biased sampling for starters!

Pizza - Blue Jeans( in town next to the Blue Ridge theater) has a New York style (thin) pizza that is even available in Extra-Large.

Reuben sandwich - Sal at White Oak Family Restaurant(Forge Mill Rd. at Hwy. 515) still makes the best in town even though others have tried to copy him and his french fries are my favorite. Generous servings too!

Big breakfast- You can tell by the pick-up trucks parked in front of The Village(1st St. in the shopping center) in the morning…a buffet style breakfast but you can order a la carte too.

Pannini sandwiches - Angelina’s Gourmet Italian Market(3640 E. 1st.)has different combo sandwiches. I am partial to their grilled cheese on tomato foccacia bread. They also have muffalettas.

Fried shrimp(and fried oysters)- You can buy them family style or buy a dinner at Southern Highlands Seafood(2414 E. 1st). They have limited hours (I think Thursday - Saturday until 7 p.m.) To go or eat at the picnic tables outside. They taste like you are eating them at the dock.

Trout - Toccoa Riverside Restaurant(8 miles out Aska Rd. on the river) still has anyone else beat. Sometimes my favorite is the pecan-crusted trout and sometimes, I  like the crab-stuffed, and sometimes, I like the smoked trout and sometimes……well, you get it.

If you have lived here any time at all, you know you need a stash of easy to fix quick recipes and their ingredients. If you don’t live here, you are asking why. The main reason for this is because once you get home you are either out in the woods or on top of a mountain, it is really much simpler to fix something to eat rather than make the return trek to one of the few non-fast food restaurants that is actually open for dinner.

I am going to try to make this a page for food ideas…recipes and restaurants. I am going to re-post the website for Cabin Cuisine.

It’s hard to get ingredients for some recipes since there are only two grocery stores in Blue Ridge…You have to drive 20 miles or so to go the nearest Wal-Mart Super Center….which is fine with me as far as Wal-Mart goes…keep it out of Blue Ridge, but bring me a Publix or a Kroger! Please…Ronnie, please…..
