DA BEARS!!!

I know this isn’t a sports blog and it isn’t a Chicago blog….but come on, it’s the Super Bowl and it’s the Bears. You know you can take the girl out of Chicago, but you can’t take Chicago out of the girl!

I think we’ll celebrate by eating Chicago-style food…Italian beef, Hebrew National mustard(from our secret supply) and, if Christopher comes over to watch with us, I will make homemade Chicago style deep dish pizza.  Sausage, plum tomatoes, about 1 lb. of cheese (Parmesan, Romano)….If that happens, I will try to remember what I do this time and turn it into a recipe to put on here. What in the world do they eat in Indianpolis for this event?   Remember this from 1986? P.S. I don’t mean we will eat the mustard with the roast beef. The mustard is for Vienna hot dogs.

Is it not funny how things happen in your life? I was raised in a very small town in here in north Georgia, eight miles from Blue Ridge,  called Morganton, and if you keep checking out this blog,  there will be many stories about life in this small town to follow. Population 260 maybe, the city limits are not that big.
I remember one time there was a sign in the middle of town that said Welcome to Morganton, Georgia Population 206“. And Morganton is one of those towns that you hear said about all the time “Don’t blink are you will miss it”. Well trust me if you blink before you come into town you will miss it also.
Anyway one day they changed the sign to read, Welcome to Morganton Georgia Population 205″. I found out an hour later that a retired school teacher had passed away. They sure were quick on adjusting those population numbers.
A couple bought an old farm across the street from my parents’ old house. They spent a lot of time and effort on the old house and barn. They really did some great work on the farm all together.
I got to know both of them as they were always out working on something on the farm…. and just when you think you know someone Boom a surprise happens.
A few months back Debbie and I were looking into expanding our Toccoa River Services business. So Debbie was doing some research on the internet.
As she was going through the internet, something caught her eye….. A picture the person looked like someone she knew but she was not quite sure, so she kept looking and to her surprise as well as mine; that person in the picture was none other then the neighbor who bought the old farm house!
Chef Douglas a master chef. His web site is on our Bloglinks listed as cabincuisine.

Baby boomers do blogging and bears

Tim and I are not about to let our kids get the best of us. If they can blog, so can we. Thanks so much to Scott K. at Transformatum for getting this up and running for us. He and Pam are good people and good friends. Thanks to Barb C. for the inspiration. She is all that.

We live off Aska Road near Blue Ridge in Fannin County ..not too far from the Rich Mountain Wildlife Management Area. We don’t have many neighbors, at least not full time..well except for the bears, deer, wolves, woodpeckers. Yes, I said bears. You sure can’t put your garbage out here. We try to take it off daily.

Our dog, a rescue black lab named Daisy, usually is the first to let us know if there is a bear in the immediate area. They get her adrenalin rushing. One day last summer, Tim went to take her out for a walk around dinner time. It had been raining so it was overcast and misty. They went out the door on the downstairs deck and took off down the driveway…but they didn’t get very far because  at the very end of the drive was a monster- size bear….Tim and Daisy froze…the bear turned its head and stared….well, according to Tim, an ex-forest service employee, that is a threat…They came flying back in the house so fast! It was like the scene in “The Great Outdoors” where John Candy rushed back in the cabin nearly strangling on the word….”BEAR!!! BEAR!!!bear.jpgI don’t know who was more frightened…the dog or my husband! Both of them had their eyes bugging out.  Yogi took off before I could get a glimpse, but it was a little too close for comfort. We’ll keep our eyes open and let you know of anymore sightings.
